Is it right that my Applications file contains all these: Firefox Firefox 4.0.1.dmg Firefox 7.0.dmg Firefox 23.0.dmg?
My Mac OS X ver 10.6.8 has not allowed me to automatically update Firefox whenever I am asked by Firefox to do so. So I have been trying to get around this by manually downloading the latest Firerox versions. In my Applications folder I now have the following files: Firefox Firefox 4.0.1.dmg Firefox 7.0.dmg Firefox 23.0.dmg
If this is correct, why does About Firefox still say I have Firefox 7.0 ?

see: How to reset the default user agent on Firefox and that doesnt just apply to sites.
If there are problems with updating or with the permissions then best is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.
Download a new copy of the Firefox application and save the disk image file to the desktop
- Firefox 23.0: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all.html
- Trash the current Firefox application (e.g. open the Applications folder in the Finder and drag the Firefox application to the Trash) to do a clean (re-)install
- Install the new version that you have downloaded

Your personal data is stored elsewhere in the Firefox profile folder, so you won't lose your bookmarks and other personal data when you uninstall and (re)install Firefox.
