when booted up one day, the screen apeared as an hourglass in the middle; top and bottom are full, the sides are black -everything displays and works. is it the monitor or the video card?

Did you try to reboot the computer?

Did you check the refresh and resolution settings in the Control Panel > Display to make sure that they are in range of what the monitor supports?

Thats weird, have you tried to boot into safe mode??????
