win 7; 32 bit OS Firefox 23.0

Chosen solution

Close Firefox first see if that works. When you do close Firefox close it from the Firefox button option and not by using task manger, closing the window, or otherwise killing the program. Allow Firefox to shutdown properly in an orderly manner.

Try that initially just closing down Firefox but NOT the Windows Operating System. Just try a couple of cycles of opening and closing Firefox to make sure it waits. (I suggest you give it a couple of minutes or so between closing and attempting to re-open)

(Firefox session restore files could have been messed up and need sorting out )

Sounds like a Window's problem rather than a Firefox problem.

Why are you trying to shutdown the computer with Firefox still running ? (and for that matter presumably other programs also still running).

Hello John99,

Not a Windows problem because I am able to shutdown in IE with no problem. Has to be a browser issue.

As to why I shutdown with Firefox running is because I always have and with no problem like I am having now. Firefox closes any open windows automatically during the shutdown process saving extra steps.

Maybe you have another solution?

Yes, closing Firefox works. Computer then shuts down normally. I was just trying to understand why the change occurred from being able to shut down from Start button with Firefox open, to now not being able to shut down without closing Firefox. Guess I`ll have to shut down this new way from now on.  :)

Thanks for your input.

Thanks for posting back. Glad Firefox continues to work.

Most programs try to do a bit of a cleanup routine as they closedown so it is usually best to close them down properly.

You will presumably have options to make the computer sleep, that needs power; or hibernate, that needs no power but may need spare RAM memory.

No doubt you have already discovered
