Clear the cache and the cookies from websites that cause problems.

"Clear the Cache":

  • Firefox/Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Cached Web Content: "Clear Now"

"Remove Cookies" from sites causing problems:

  • Firefox/Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: "Show Cookies"

Reload web page(s) and bypass the cache to refresh possibly outdated or corrupted files.

  • Hold down the Shift key and left-click the Reload button
  • Press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)
  • Press "Command + Shift + R" (Mac)

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window.

Does this occur when you try to go "Back" to a page?

That issue is caused by sites instructing Firefox not to cache the page. When you go back to the page, Firefox honors the site's instructions and requires you to regenerate the request. When it's a POST request, this requires an extra confirmation. Yes, that is annoying.

In many cases, you can work around this by opening links off the page in a new tab or new window. For example, if it's a forum or search site, you usually can Ctrl+click to open a bunch of links in new tabs rather than going forward and back in the same tab.

If that isn't an option, you may need a program to modify the site's instructions (the cache headers) on the fly -- before they are received by Firefox. While it might be possible to do this with a Firefox extension, in a brief search, I didn't see any extensions that mentioned it. In an unrelated forum, I saw a suggestion to use an external proxy application such as Proxomitron.

I`m not sure what to do "ctrl +click"

more options

By Ctrl+click I mean to hold the Ctrl key on the keyboard while clicking the link. This is the same as using right-click > Open in a New Tab, but faster if you want to open several links.

Tried all those but still getting"document expired".

Hi terrace, Firefox normally shows document expired because the server instructed Firefox not to store the page. The diagnostic steps are to rule out problems in Firefox that might also trigger the problem, and if you have ruled those out, then you are seeing the correct behavior. The Ctrl+click workaround is to minimize your need to return to the page, but it does not change Firefox's behavior of adhering to the caching instructions sent by the server.

Sorry i`m late. RE Document Expired. I solved a popup problem by right clicking the site page and going to "view page info", then permissions, Java (TM) Platform SE 7 U, and selecting "block" instead of "allow". See attachment please. The site i`m currently having the "document expired" problem with is called "Elibcat" a library. Could there be something in there to block to stop Document Expired?

Hi terrace, please give the best page to visit to experience this problem, and describe the steps that lead to the error. (I found the home page of the site, but have no idea which part you're using.)

I login, then go to my account, then to review account and going back twice i get the document expired.

Yes, going "Back" and finding a document expired out of the cache (needing to be reloaded) is normal for some websites; that's how they are designed to work. You should be able to use links in the page's navigation bar to get to a different area of the site.
