i am trying to force firefox to only save to a windows share network location eg. .gvfs/dump i am running linux mint maya x 32 with active directory to a win2003 server. i have set the default save location in firefox to .gvfs/dump and all works great until there is network interference, such as a power cut/drop or internet crash or the server goes down. when the machines then reopen firefox or they try saving before the network is up again it reverts back to saving to downloads and i have to manually go round to every machine and change the settings again.

is it possible to force firefox to only save to the network location i need regardless of the location being available right there and then? so basically it will give an error saying the save location is not available and wont save until the network is up again and always keep the specified network location, and then on re-connection to the server will carry as normal???

any help would be greatly appreciated

Chosen solution

So,

  1. The network is not the best connection
  2. Firefox restarts and preferences for downloads does not stay the same
  3. If the network is down in the middle of a file save you want a network monitor that cancels a file saving
  4. Once the file is cancelled a notification is given to the sales person using firefox on their computer and you want the preferences to stay the same.

Unfortunately since cor-el has stated that Firefox does not do this by design, please also post your question for a developer in stackoverflow.com.

Please troubleshoot the network preferences in the Browser and profile you are working with and let us know how it goes.

I don't think that this is possible. If the download location isn't available then Firefox will reset this to the default location and the only option would be to verify that this network location is available before starting to save files.

thanks for your feed back, but no the preferences and firefox are as they should be as long as everything is working. what i am trying to do is stop it from defaulting to the default save location. like chrome does, when the network drops chrome will ask where to save letting you know the network has dropped. after canceling and the network is up again it continues to save the correct location. i am working in zimbabwe where power failures are pretty regular firefox automatically defaults without any notification.

i need to change this as within my business the computers need to save .pdf files across the WAN and LAN to the server for tax purposes which is then printed. as much as 100 + files a day, so chrome is out with there stupid "discard or keep" popup.

i have edited the firefox config files and still it gives the same behavior.

user_pref("browser.download.defaultFolder", "/home/administrator/.gvfs/dump on server");

user_pref("browser.download.dir", "/home/administrator/.gvfs/dump on server"); user_pref("browser.download.downloadDir", "/home/administrator/.gvfs/dump on server"); user_pref("browser.download.lastDir", "/home/administrator/.gvfs/dump on server")

the sales people cant constantly keep checking if the network is up when doing there sales, in addition as soon as the network drops with firefox open or opening it defaults with no notification. i want to hardwire the save location so if the network drops it will give an error and not save therefore notifying you of the network drop.
