trying to remove old bookmarks - I select the bookmark and then select blue (white) star to edit. As soon as I hit remove button the drop-down edit box disappears. Closing Firefox and restarting, the bookmark remains and is still active.

Problems with bookmarks and history not working properly can be caused by a corrupted places.sqlite database file.

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database file in the Firefox profile folder.
