How can I get id of padlock icon? It's annoying.

The padlock icon that tells you the site is secure or not secure (open or closed padlock) is almost 2" square and is in the middle of my screen. It blocks the info under it. How can I get rid of it? Why can't it just show and then leave? Why does it have to stay on the screen?
