A few days ago I changed a favicon on one of my sites and yet my Firefox bookmark favicon steadfastly remains the old favicon and will not update to the new one! I have tried 'forget history' for the site and looked at where Firefox stores bookmark info but this is as a .sql file and is not easy to edit.

Any idea why my bookmarked favicon has not/will not update and how I can get it to update?

Hi Thanks! The code has worked...and this is a fix to the problem.

I was unsure about the "undefined" response but when I visited my bookmarks all the favicons had gone! Then I visited my site with the new favicon and finally it updated the favicon in the bookmark! Good!

Now I am visiting all sites in my bookmarks to restore all favicons back to all my bookmarked sites!

Delete the bookmark, then bookmark the page again.

If you have the same problem with a large number of bookmarks, try the Favicon Reloader add-on.

I didn't mention that I have tried deleting the bookmark and re-bookmarking the site so many times without success.

Favicon Reloader hasn't helped either.

Do you see the new favicon on the tab bar?

Yes the new favicon displays on the browser tab as normal

You can try to let all favicons expire with pasting this code in the command line in the Browser Console (Firefox/Tools > Web Developer).

Note that this will remove all favicons, so you need to revisit website to make Firefox retrieve the favicons.

var fS = Components.classes["@mozilla.org/browser/favicon-service;1"]
         .getService(Components.interfaces.nsIFaviconService);
fS.expireAllFavicons();

When I use the code I get undefined back eg: var fS = Components.classes["@mozilla.org/browser/favicon-service;1"]

        .getService(Components.interfaces.nsIFaviconService);

fS.expireAllFavicons(); undefined

That response is OK. You should see that all items in the history and bookmarks have lost their favicons and restore their favicons after revisiting a link.

You're welcome

Alternatively you could also use the SQLite Manager extension.

Favicons are stored as BLOB (binary large object) data in the moz_places and moz_favicons tables in the places.sqlite file.
You would have to clear the favicon entry for the site in the moz_places table and remove the corresponding record in the moz_favicons table to reset the favicon.
