I'd like to close the active tab I'm viewing with a quick click, rather than having to look all through the dozens of tabs in Firefox, right and left, to find the tab I'm in. Surely there's a button or something that will close the viewed tab.

hello mattwolf7, the keyboard shortcut ctrl+w closes the current tab. you might also be interested in the design change in the upcoming firefox 29, since this will make the current tab on the tabbar more visible: Learn more about the design of the new Firefox version 29

You can middle-click the tab with the mouse scroll wheel to close this tab.
This works for all tabs, also for tabs other than the currently selected tab.
