To change mail accaount password
My e-mail server asked me to change my password and I did so. When I started Mozilla obviously detected that change since asked me to type a new password when connecting. I did, but it did not work (and it was not that I typed the wrong password, I know, that sometimes happens). For some reason, it did not change the password, since after couple of times it asked me, and I typed the new password (couldn't log in to the mail account anyway), I checked the password at tools > options > security > passwords > Saved Passwords, and the password for that account was still the old one. I could not find any other place to change the password (I do not have a master password, by the way). Angry after looking and looking into mozilla support I gave up, I thought it was an error of the e-mail server, and I call for support. They did not managed to help me since there was no error there. What I finally did is removed that mail account in Mozilla and added a mail account again. That solved the whole problem, however it took me so much time and effort to finally solve it. I am just telling this in case there is someone in the same situation....

Obviously, when I say Mozilla, I mean Mozilla Thunderbird...
When you were a the the saved password screen you should have removed the saved passwords there. Then restart Thunderbird and you would be asked for a password the next time one was needed. Removing the entire email account was pretty drastic and not the recommended method to just change a password.
I had this same problem and "Airmail" started me in the right direction. For me I had just migrated from a corporate pop3 server to the Google Apps server. Previously I had used "Encrypted Passwords" but with the Google Apps as our new server it doesn't yet (why?) accept encrypted passwords. To fix this problem I went to Tools>Account Settings>Server Settings - select your account with pop.gmail.com then under Authentication Method, change "Encrypted Password" to "Normal Password". That should allow you to receive emails, but to be able to send messages you also have to change the Outgoing Server STMP by selecting your gmail account then change the Authentication method to "normal password"
Before making this change I was getting the Alert Error message that said "This POP3 server does not seem to support encrypted passwords. If you just set up this account, please try changing to 'Normal password' as the 'Authentication method' in the 'Account Settings | Server settings'."
