I lost the Most Viewed dropdown under search bar, used it several times in same session, and then it was just gone.

more options

The dropdown is/was my most-used part of any page, using it to get to everything I need. The only other thing that I noticed changed is new green down-tab at top of every page: Safe Website/number of trackers. I can't get rid of it. Avira virus control icon is on my desktop, but icon also suddenly appeared on right side of search bar. I deleted it because I have it on desktop. I don't why it appeared suddenly. This is my 3rd session today. I hadn't changed anything from previous sessions, so don't know why dropdown disappeared.

Any help appreciated. hk

hi, hopefully a screenshot can make things clearer - when you right click in the area of the red dot, then a context menu will show up where you can reenable the bookmarks toolbar.

hello hk, please try the following in order to restore the "most visited" bookmark: enter about:config into the firefox address bar (confirm the info message in case it shows up) & search for the preference named browser.places.smartBookmarksVersion - right-click and reset that entry to the default value and restart firefox afterwards.

in regards to your other problem - if there are any unusual interface elemtns popping up, they are most probably caused by an installed extension. you can go to the firefox menu ≡ > addons > extensions & remove or disable any entries that you don't use or know about...

Hello philipp. Followed your clear instructions. At browser.places..., values were Status userset, Type integer, Value 7. Reset seemed to be best choice. Clicked Reset. Values were Status default, Type string, Value blank. Closed Firefox. Restarted PC, opened Firefox. All were at previous values. Tried sequence again, same result. But I noticed that entry of 1-2 characters in address bar created dropdown of names/URLs, which seem to be most used. I.e., "in" put link to gmail Inbox at top of list. I'm running Firefox V. 35.0.1. Maybe Firefox has substituted this change for the Most Visited menu. Your instructions did help in that they forced me to look around to make sure nothing else had changed. The strange green dropdown was Safe Browser, associated with Avira, which I have for virus scans. Managed to uninstall that. Still no drodown Most Visited, but I'm OK. Thank you for your time and assistance. helen

yes the address-bar (a.k.a awesome bar) will also offer you matches from your history/bookmarks. however the most visited sites folder should still be there. it's normal that the "browser.places.smartBookmarksVersion" entry reappears once you restart the browser, this procedure should trigger the recreation of the folder... i now come to think that you may just have the bookmarks toolbar hidden by accident which contains the "most visited" folder by default - in order to show it, just right click on a blank spot on the tab bar and enable the bookmarks toolbar in there.

Now the awful truth comes out: I'm a Luddite due to ignorance. I don't know what/where the tab bar is. I see Tabs appear, don't know how to use them. Everything I do is in separate windows. I don't change anything because I no longer have corporate in-house tech support. "Hidden by accident" describes my online life. As does "broken by accident."

Can you attach a screenshot?

  • Use a compressed image type like PNG or JPG to save the screenshot
  • Make sure that you do not exceed the maximum size of 1 MB

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

Make sure that toolbars like the "Bookmarks Toolbar" are visible.

  • "3-bar" Firefox menu button > Customize > Show/Hide Toolbars
  • View > Toolbars
Tap the Alt key or press F10 to show the Menu Bar
  • Right-click empty toolbar area

Open the Customize window and set which toolbar items to display.

  • "3-bar" Firefox menu button > Customize
  • check that "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is on the Bookmarks Toolbar
  • if "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is not on the Bookmarks Toolbar then drag it back from the Customize palette into the Customize window to the Bookmarks Toolbar
  • if missing items are in the Customize palette then drag them back from the Customize window on the toolbar
  • if you do not see an item on a toolbar and in the Customize palette then click the Restore Defaults button to restore the default toolbar setup

Hi philipp

It worked! The constantly used Most Visited dropdown is back! I thank you very much for your patience and persistence. I know it's a little thing for most people, but for my medication-induced cognitive dysfunction (a.k.a.. stupidity), it looms large in my Firefox existence. (OK, a bit personal, but goes with the territory.) You were great.

I also need to thank another person who got me think a different way about the problem. So I'll end up posting this twice because I'm not sure how these replies work.

Your assistance is much appreciated. hk

Hello cor-el In combination with help from another support person, your solution worked! You got me looking around at different parts of my page, and I retrieved the Most Visited dropdown, which I use constantly. Thank you for your time and clear information. hk
