Is this how you want this setting?
When you try to open the file, what message do you see? Check the size, compare it to the online source. Was there any problem during the download?
When I clicked on this link I got nothing. I solved the problem by using another browser for downloads.
If the link you are talking about is the one I posted, that is your current startup page.
As to the downloads, if this is what you want to do, that is your choice. Good luck.

I fail to see how the information that you have given is a help for my problem. I download a program using firefox I then go to the download folder (Ctrl+J) and click on the download, nothing. I try open the folder with no luck. I have tried the multitude of suggestions without success. I am a longtime firefox user and will continue to use it, except for downloads. It seems that there is no solution to my problem.
Were you doing this; Open the Download Manager. Right click an entry.
As a longtime Firefox user, I have a working knowledge of how downloading works. I have tried all the normal ways to open a downloaded file. I was wondering if it would be possible to move my downloads to another file and try to open from there?
