I can no longer watch video from news sites. The ad that plays before the video displays fine, but afterward, the news video never stops loading, so it won't play. Until I updated to Firefox 50 I had no problem. In my search for answers, I tried to restore my computer to a day I had no trouble, I rolled back to Firefox 43, then updated to 47, then checked and unchecked the add ons, my privacy and security settings, refreshed my Firefox, re-installed Flash, enabled it, disabled the Media Player DLL, and so many things I can't even remember what to undo. Media plays fine in Youtube. Game websites work. I have tried to contact the website of the videos that won't play now, but of course I haven't heard from them. I am running on WinXP w/SP3. Any suggestions?

Can you post a link to a publicly accessible page (i.e. no authentication or signing on required)?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Appearance
  • Do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window

Clear the cache and remove the cookies from websites that cause problems via the "3-bar" Firefox menu button (Options/Preferences).

"Clear the cache":

  • Firefox/Options/Preferences -> Advanced -> Network -> Cached Web Content: "Clear Now"

"Remove the cookies" from websites that cause problems.

  • Firefox/Options/Preferences -> Privacy -> "Use custom settings for history" -> Cookies: "Show Cookies"

You can try to create a new profile to test if your current profile is causing the problem.

See "Creating a profile":

If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over problems.

None of that helped. I'm going to try a clean install next. Wish me luck.

I had to disable my flash blocker for the clip to play.

Still no success. In my search for answers, I looked in my browser console while waiting for a video to load at foxnews.com.

Does this mean anything relevant, (and if so, what to do about it?):

Cannot play media. No decoders for requested formats: audio/mp4;codecs= mp4a.40.2, audio/mp4;codecs= mp4a.40.2, audio/mp4;codecs= mp4a.40.2, audio/mp4;codecs= mp4a.40.2, audio/mp4;codecs= mp4a.40.2

ALSO:

Cannot play media. No decoders for requested formats: application/f4m+xml, application/f4m+xml, application/x-mpegURL, application/x-mpegURL, application/x-mpegURL, application/vnd.apple.mpegurl

You are on Windows XP and thus do not have support to play MP4 files natively. Websites like YouTube can switch to another media format if the detect that you do not support a specific format. Apparently the foxnews website doesn't do this and you may be out-of-luck with Windows XP. If you can get the URL of the video then you can use a player like VLC to play such a file.
