When I upgraded to the most recent version of Firefox, I lost all of my tabs. The directions on upgrade indicated that I would not lose any tab information. However, on startup of the new version, I seem to only have the option to restore from sync which I never did. I do not believe that I was instructed to do this prior to closing. I maintain 2 active open profiles, home and office, and I do not want these to be synced. I had them both set up to automatically restore the last session which was working well. I am no longer able to restore from an old session. I think this is because this is an entirely new version of Firefox and the local settings were not saved. Now I want to either recover the old tab data and apply to the new installation or restore the previous version of Firefox which might have my previous tab data. Please help.

Chosen solution

Success.

Under the user profiles directory I was able to find the saved files for the previous installation. The directories were located here in Windows 7:

C:\Users\**user**\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\nxndl02z.default-release

There was an old installation file here which was for the previous installation of firefox that just got written over:

C:\Users\**user**\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\o5614or1.default\sessionstore-backups

All of the old session files were located here. I had a couple of problems during installation (I closed 1/3 open windows during installation) and so the session data for that window was not there in the most recent file. There was an additional larger file that was 1 min older. I used this file, recovery.baklz4, renamed to sessionstore.jsonlz4, and pasted to the new (first listed above) profile folder and success.

I am still missing some window related data though. When I opened up my webmail tab, it was not using the correct information and I had to update the profile so that this tab would display correctly. I am not sure where this data might be saved. Either way, this is minor compared to getting all of my tabs back.

Thanks and I hope this helps someone else.

You may have corrupt sessionstore [v56] sessionstore.jsonlz4 file(s). Delete all sessionstore* files and the sessionstore-backups folder.

Type about:support<enter> in the address bar.

Under the page logo on the left side, you will see Application Basics. Under this find Profile Folder. To its right press the button Show Folder. This will open your file browser to the current Firefox profile. Now Close Firefox.

Windows: Show Folder; Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder

Linux: Under the page logo on the left side, you will see Application Basics. Under this find Profile Directory. To its right press the button Open Directory.

Locate the above file. Then rename or delete it. Restart Firefox.

Don't delete the files if you need to rescue any data from them, just move them out of the profile folder to some location where Firefox doesn't look for them. You can try to read out their contents using this tool: https://www.jeffersonscher.com/res/scrounger.html

I swapped out the sessionstore* files. I place the recovery.jsonlz4 file back in the profile folder and renamed it to session store and saved the sessionstore* file into the backup folder. This did nothing but give me a fresh install. I have no bookmarks, no tabs.

I feel that Firefox gave me a complete new install and wiped my data. My only hope is to find out where it is if it is anywhere.
