Help with security settings

more options

I just downloaded the Firefox browser to my computer and need to configure my security settings in order to have access to a specific site. I have never used Firefox before.

My instructions say I must have version 1.0 or newer. I have version 100

The instructions then say to do the following:

Select Tools/Options/Advanced Icon/Encryption Tab Under Protocols select check boxes for Use SSL3.0 and Use TLS1.0 Select Privacy Icon In the Firefox will drop-down list box select Use custom settings for history Select options accept cookies from sites and Cleat history when Firefox closes De-select Remember search and form history and Remember what I have downloaded Click OK

I cannot find "Tools" Can you please tell me where to look for it and will the other items be under tools.

I need this help ASAP because I'm trying to fill out a form for a background check and security clearance that is due today.

Any and all help will be appreciated.

Thank you.

Belinda Jackson

Please explain the problem in detail. What happens? What are the exact error messages?

I cannot find "Tools"

Press the 'hamburger' (3 horizontal lines) icon in the toolbar.

[v56+] Type about:preferences<enter> in the address box. If you need it, there is a search box upper-right.

Under Protocols select check boxes for Use SSL3.0 and Use TLS1.0

Hi Belinda, that might be an old site. Firefox has totally discontinued support for SSL3.0 connection because the protocol became obsolete. It's still possible to enable insecure TLS1.0 connections, but it's no longer exposed on the Settings page.

But first, are you sure you need to change your settings? Unfortunately, allowing insecure TLS1.0 connections is a global setting and can't be set for just one site, so please try a normal connection and let us know what message you get that indicates needing to use an obsolete protocol.

If it's absolutely necessary, here's how to lower your security:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button accepting the risk.

More info on about:config: Configuration Editor for Firefox. The moderators would like us to remind you that changes made through this back door aren't fully supported and aren't guaranteed to continue working in the future.

(2) In the search box in the page, type or paste security.tls.version.min and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Double-click the preference to display an editing field, and change the value to 1 then press Enter or click the blue check mark button to save the change.

When you're done with the site, use the left-arching arrow at the right end of the row to reset the value back to 3 (meaning that Firefox will use TLS1.2 or better).
