Recent Firefox upgrade: Website appearance option no longer exists..
Changing font size does not change font on 'start' page. 'Website Appearance' option does not exist, therefore I cannot change text size on homepage. If I cannot increase size, I can no longer read mail notifications and therefore I can no longer use Firefox. Please advise solution. Why was the update designed in this way?

It is usually better to change the default page zoom level if you want larger text.
Does it still happen in Troubleshoot Mode?
If I do this, then all my other pages will be abnormally large! I don't want to use oversized text on all my windows just to suit Mozilla's limitations! My previous incarnation of Firefox has worked perfectly for years, but now it's difficult for me to use. Why has it been changed? What is the logic behind making it less versatile??
The "Website appearance" section still exists for me in settings, including the font size section. Did you try Troubleshoot Mode?
Doesn't zooming the page work for you ? Like posted above, increasing the font size can cause issues with website that specify settings in 'em' units and text may fall out of a container, using full page zoom prevents such issues. Firefox should remember the page zoom unless you clear the "Site settings" or use Private Browsing mode.
'Website Appearance' does not appear on my setting options, neither does it appear if I look via the 'Search' box. Zooming the page works on individual opened mails but doesn't do anything to the underlying Firefox page where the contents of my mailboxes are listed - it is the view of that chronological list of mails that I cannot change (or read clearly).
