When I open the FF browser it opens to a blank tab and not to my default location(my yahoo) Then the "go-back" and "go-forward" buttons are inoperable, they do not ever light up. Also, the bookmark tool bar has to be turned off and back on in order to show up or work. This happens every time I turn on FF.

Can I remove FF and reload it? I don't want to loose all my bookmarks and settings. I have rebooted my machine already and nothing.

I also have this problem. Opens to a blank tab. Greyed out back and forward buttons. It also displays the name of the website in the active tab, but does not display the web address in the main bar. This is really really really annoying.

Annoying? Flies in my house is annoying, then I kill them. This is unacceptable. I suppose it is time to embrace Internet Explorer. May as well try reloading. What have I got to lose that I have not already lost.

Thanks for replying Auralflower, but, I was not really looking for a support group.^-^ I was looking for some answers.

Issues with the Back button not working properly can be caused by the McAfee SiteAdvisor extension.

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

  • Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

Cor-el, I do not use McAfee, I use ESET and occasionally Spybot. But, I will try what you suggested. I played with the quick-start button and got it to open right one time. Of course the go-back button is a HUGE inconvience, it is all of it together that causes it to be a problem I will not live with.

Thanks again. Too bad the people that program this shit won't actually respond to questions concerning their product. Note to FF programmers. QUIT UPDATING IT!!!!!! If it is working leave it the fuck alone already!!!!! Do you really have to justify your non-supporting existance by constantly trying new ways to annoy use???

I started MF in safe mode, and the problem did not occur. Since starting in safe mode disables extensions and themes (and I use the default theme), I enabled the extensions one by one and discovered that a toolbar I have is the culprit. I have Yahoo toolbar extension, and with it disabled, the problems of missing start page, missing URLs in the address bar, and missing ability to go back and forward both using buttons and via right-click menu disappeared. I sent a note on Yahoo help to tell them the toolbar is a cause and to request their techs take a look. I invite others to do the same. Meanwhile, I won't be using the toolbar until an adjustment comes through.

I did the same: Disabled the yahoo toolbar extension and everything reappeared...the reload button, the go back/go forward button and the other missing components. I also won't be using the yahoo toolbar until an adjustment is made from them.

@stringdg If you knew why software has to be constantly updated, you would not complain as you do. CSS and HTML keep evolving, with new standards and features. The W3C is the organization that implements new standards into these languages. Browsers have to keep up with these standards, just as websites do. If not, websites will not render correctly. Say for instance, a website implements new and upcoming code into their site. The browser has to recognize that new code correctly in order show you the indented result. Updating is a must, and it has to be done. Whether it is a website, a program, web app, or browser. Firefox (and Mozilla as a whole) is open source. It is mostly governed by volunteers. This whole support forum is moderated by volunteers and the community at large. It is hard for a non-techie to understand this, I know, but please keep this in mind.

Hey, I did not think I even had the Yahoo toolbar. Turns out it was running in the background and when I got rid of it, the problem stopped. Thank you and thanks to everyone that replied to try and help. I appreciate it very much.

Namaste,

DG

Ya know what? Ur right. I did not think of all that. But, as soon as you started talking about it I knew it was right. Thanks for reminding me of what is going on in the background to keep this product up and running.

Your welcome:) Honestly, I didn't know all this cr*p either, until I became a techie myself. I develop websites, and you have to keep your code updated and fresh, and it is a pain in the butt. You have to make sure each website looks the same in every single browser, and every single version of every browser. They all render code differently, because of new and evolving standards and how that companies coding beliefs. It blows, but I have to do it, and I can imagine what the FF developers have to keep up with. It's stressful.

This problem started for me after Windows Update ran on April 14th and 15th. I tried System Restore to remove the updates, but it won't restore the previous system. It's telling me to turn off my antivirus software, which I have done, but it repeats the same message afterwards. I strongly suspect that Windows Update is the cause.

Like others, my Back and Reload items don't work and my Bookmarks toolbar is blank (even though it's checked); I have to uncheck it and then recheck it to get it to appear. My bookmarked sites no longer know my passwords and won't retain them after I reenter them.

When I click on my Gmail reminder con, a blank tab of Firefox comes up. I have to click on it two more times before I get Gmail to load.

Like the guy said. It was the Yahoo tool bar that was causing all the trouble. For me it loaded when I did the update and did not notice it. It came on and I just deleted it. Or, so I thought. Turns out all I did was remove it from the tool bars. I had to go into the add ons and actually remove it from the list. Then the problems went away. I think it is a problem between Win7 and yahoo.

Disable and then remove your Yahoo! toolbar. Do not just 'x' it out. You will have to restart your system after doing this, or at the very least restart your firefox browser by hitting ctrl+alt+delete and ending the firefox task. I do NOT understand why Mozilla lets these stupid software manufacturers just load their browsers with stupid programs that do not work. There should be a bit more policing on their part. Thanks for inconveniencing me again Mozilla, after abandoning your browser for more than a year, now i'm reconsidering re-abandoning it AGAIN!
