after exit Firefox, process remains active without responding
Our companies continue using FF16.01 because higher FF versions hang after close. Same conclusion on 2013-11-25. Tested all the day: a working portable FF16, with extensions enabled, then disabled; plug-ins updated; parent.lock file deleted. Put on a USB stick. Then copy to C: User Account \Applications Data\PortApp (WinXP). Then update the working FF16 to FF25 (via portable apps). Start FF25, close... process hangs. One can only kill the process using Task Manager. Problem is only to FF. Please do something about it after 1 yr! I now use Chrome more.

You can try to write a bug report in Firefox at bugzilla.mozilla.org
Also could you try to disable hardware acceleration, or updating graphics drivers, does that work?
Perform these steps:
- Click the orange Firefox button at the top left, then select the "Options" button, or, if there is no Firefox button at the top, go to Tools > Options.
- In the Firefox options window click the Advanced tab, then select "General".
- In the settings list, you should find the Use hardware acceleration when available checkbox. Uncheck this checkbox.
- Now, restart Firefox and see if the problems persist.
Additionally, please check for updates for your graphics driver by following the steps mentioned in the following Knowledge base articles:

After exit FF (FireFox), process remains active without responding.
Restarting FF results in error:
"FireFox is already running but is not responding"
Our companies have to continue using FF16.01 because higher FF versions hang after close in combination with the pc-installed government Belgium eID middleware.
Problem: "FireFox is already running but is not responding"
Cause: Belgium eID middleware extension hangs FireFox process (freezing)
Makeshift: close FF, kill hanging process
Tested: portable FF, combined with pc-installed government Belgium eID middleware
Test case: no extensions except government eID; no add-ons; plug-ins disabled; if needed: parent.lock file deleted and/or hardware acceleration unchecked; close via Menu>'Exit'
Date: 201303 (2days) and 201311 (3 days)
Portable: WinXP Pro SP3 patched / java latest
Results:
1/ FF16 + eID3.5.6(6954)
Closes normal.
2/ FF16 + eID4.05(7382)
Closes normal with connected cardreader containing eID-card.
If not: close FF, kill hanging process
3/ FF25 + eID3.5.6(6954)
Closes normal with connected cardreader and running eID middleware
If not: close FF, kill hanging process
4/ FF25 + eID4.05(7382)
Closes normal with connected cardreader containing eID-card.
If not: close FF, kill hanging process
5/ FF16 and FF25
No eID middleware, no cardreader, add-ons on, plug-ins enabled, hardware acceleration on.
Closes normal.

I reported the eID problem in FireFox to the Belgium government ICT department FEDICT:
https://addons.mozilla.org/nl/firefox/addon/belgium-eid/reviews/
The answer from FEDICT is:
"
door Fedict (ontwikkelaar) op December 4, 2013
Thank you for your detailed report. We fixed some issues regarding this before, but if it is still happening we'll need to change our approach and have the blocking process poll from time to time
"
Indeed, the add-on provider has to debug the government Belgium eID middleware.
I want to tell people here, that there is still a problem with the government Belgium eID middleware and that this problem has nothing to do with FireFox. So they have to contact FEDICT, the federal ICT department of the government of Belgium
