Why is Firefox suddenly making my internet so slow?

Firefox is running very slowly now. Videos on all sites take forever to load, if they load at all. & games are choppy & run in slow motion. Firefox is also often completely unresponsive, & randomly freezes when typing comments, clicking links, etc. I had some problems before, but since upgrading to Firefox 13, it's been ridiculously bad. I even called my internet provider, Charter, cause I thought it was somethin they were doin. Their Speed Test is one reason I know it's not them. When I run the Speed Test using Windows IE, I get these results: http://speedtest.ookla.com/result/1702077109.png When I run that same test through Firefox, I get these results: http://speedtest.ookla.com/result/1702070678.png I've already tried several things to fix this, including a complete uninstall/re-install.

That's really strange.

  • First, can you click on the Firefox button, go to Options, click on Options.
  • In the options windows, please select the Advanced pane.
  • Under Connection, click Settings. If anything other than Use system proxy settings is selected, change it to that option.

If that doesn't work, please do the following:

  • Click the Firefox button at the top left, then click the Help menu and select Troubleshooting information from the submenu. If you don't have a Firefox button, click the Help menu at the top and select Troubleshooting information from the menu.

Now, a new tab containing your troubleshooting information should open.

  • At the top of the page, you should see a button that says "Copy all to clipboard. Click it.
  • Now, go back to your forum post and click inside the reply box. Press Ctrl+V to paste all the information you copied into the forum post.

If you need further information about the Troubleshooting information page, please read the article Use the Troubleshooting Information page to help fix Firefox issues.

Thanks in advance for your help!

A possible cause is security software (firewall,anti-virus) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.

Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

You can try to reset Firefox and create a new profile.

Why do you have TLS disabled (security.enable_tls)?

BTW, SSL2 is not longer supported (Bug 593077 - Remove SSL 2.0 support), so you can reset the security.enable_ssl2 pref.

Did you try a new profile or reset Firefox?

more options

Don't know what TLS is or how it gets enabled/disabled. Also not familiar with SSL2. (I guess I'm not what you'd call an "advanced" user) As for the trying a new profile or resetting, I completely uninstalled Firefox, including my personal preferences, & started over. This is a fresh download, with only the most basic add-ons, like Flash & Java. I never had problems this bad until the update to 13.

Which security software (firewall, anti-virus) do you have?

more options

I have the same issue. I completely disabled Norton 360 Firewall after removing and resetting setting permissions to Allow. It is still slow with no firewall.
