Can't connect to POP server but can send via SMTP same password

more options

I am using a University of Washington (UW) email address (myname@uw.edu) configured through gmail.com (all student UW email addresses are configured through gmail). I have configured the smtp server in Thunderbird and it works perfectly for sending email (see settings, below). However, the pop server, when I try to download email from my account keeps stating that my password is incorrect. I am using the same password that I use to send email via the smtp server.

The instruction for setting up the email in Thunderbird are as follows:

Incoming Mail (POP) Server pop.gmail.com Requires SSL: Yes Port: 995

Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server smtp.gmail.com (see below though...) Requires SSL: Yes Requires TLS: Yes (if available) Requires Authentication: Yes Port for SSL: 465 Port for TLS/STARTTLS: 587

"If you use Gmail with your work or school account, enter mail.domain.com, then select Port 110"

For the smtp server, I substituted smtp.uw.edu (rather than smtp.gmail.com or the suggested mail.uw.edu) and this (and only nthis) works perfectly for sending email from my UW account using Thunderbird. However no variation on the POP server name (or port, or security setting ) works. The only one that actually even asks for my password is the original server name address...the, above (POP.gmail.com). However while it connects to the server, the password is not ever accepted...the very same password that works for the smtp server.

Any suggestions to troubleshoot this would be greatly appreciated. This is really frustrating. I have no problem with any other email servers that I have configured in Thunderbird.

Thank you! Chick

Thank you. I complied with all the instructions, setting a separate email password for gmail (not the UW password, as per the instructions). Still no luck.

Thanks, though. I learned some important information towards making this work.

Just a few crazy questions:

1) does imap.uw.edu work? 2) nay reason you rather use pop over the local folders feature, seeing as you have insane storage on MOST Google for Universities (what UW is using). 3) Does UW require a digital certificate like more and more universities are doing nowadays to login or use network resources like email and blackboard?

When I changed my googleapps password and tried to connect, I still couldn't connect BUT I received an email fro google stating that someone was trying to access my account. If it was me then I should change the security on the account to less secure. When I did that everything worked perfectly.

Apparently when connecting to the UW email on the web, I just use by UW NetID and PW whereas when connecting from Thunderbird, I have to connect to gmail (using a different password set up in the googleapps management page) in order to download my emails to Thunderbird.

I had more trouble configuring imap than POP.

I have no idea whether there is a digital certificate requirement but am guessing "no" since I am now connected.

Thank you.

with that once MFA (Multi-Factor is rolled out for students, as mentioned on the IT Page for the University, USE IT, it will make up for the less secure setting on the Google side. The reason you don't get this when connecting via UW resources/webmail is that the secure authentication is being offloaded to the University NetID validation then sent to Google.
