I get a message "Download complete"... options are to install or install later. I didn't ask to download anything. I can't ge rid of the message
I've run both Malwarebytes and Kaspersky. Each found a few threats which were quarantined/deleted. They did not fix/delete the message.
Additionally, the startup is extremely slow... don't know if that is an indication of a virus or simply an older computer (2006 Toshiba Satellite, dual processor) with the challenges of more current software/virus protection etc.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
See "Creating a profile":
- http://kb.mozillazine.org/Standard_diagnostic_-_Firefox#Profile_issues
If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from an existing profile to the new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.
Try to boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps.
