How do I add Thunderbird to my Android smartphone?
I need to access an existing Thunderbird email through my Android smart phone

There is no such thing as Thunderbird email. Email comes from your provider. Thunderbird is email client software and does not run on Android. Your phone should have a client installed on it already. Add your providers details to that and check your mail. If you are going to check mail from multiple devices IMAP works better than POP.
So theoretically I can sync a Thunderbird mailbox with the email app on my phone? Sorry for the dumb question but I am having trouble and need to have constant access to the Thunderbird email account when I am away from my desktop computer. Thank you for your time
Again there is no such thing as Thunderbird email or account. You get your email from your email provider.
If you want to check email from multiple devices use IMAP.
If IMAP is not available you need to have the email clients you use leave messages on the server so the other device can see them. You will periodically have go clean up the server or your provider is let you know you are using too much server storage.
Google IMAP vs POP to learn how each protocol works and select what works best for you.
Ok, I think I finally understand what you are saying, our email server is through prohosting, so I will sync messages through imap though that. I have one more question, is the address book on Thunderbird? If so, is there a way to export or share that to another device?
You got it.
The Thunderbird address book is local on your computer. You can export it to a file, take it to the other computer and import it there. It will not sync. There are some add-ons that will allow an address book hosted on Gmail to be share by several computers.
To export.. Open address book window. Select Tools-Export Name the file Select where to save it so you can find it. Select file type LDIIF
Get the file to the 2nd computer and his time select Tools-Import.
