I just started getting pop-up ads along the borders of unrelated webpages - how do I prevent these?

The ads are for games, dating sites, tarot, etc. They each have a small message underneath reading "Ads not by this site." This just started a few day ago, and does not occur when I open the same page on Internet Explorer.

Hello Bgraff1, welcome to Mozilla Support!

These ads can appear due to many reasons:

  • Some extensions have been installed among other software (check if you have some wierd add-ons or extensions that you havent installed and try to disable them)
  • You might have navigated to a website that opens theese ads periodicly on your Firefox Browser (try to close all windows and just open one that you know is secure, like google.com and see if ads still appear).
  • There can be a Virus on your computer targeting some browsers, where appearently IE is not one of them (do a virus scan to check for this)

One simple thing you can do to debug is to simply relaunch Firefox withouth extentions (so called Safe mode). see this article for detailed instructions on how to do this https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode

If the that doesn't work, you can try to reset Firefox. To do so, follow this article for detailed instructions https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/reset-firefox-easily-fix-most-problems

I hope this helps.

Thanks, but this doesn't address my issue.

Do a malware check with some malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.
Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.
All these programs have free versions.

Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

You can also do a check for a rootkit infection with TDSSKiller.
