I changed the settings for "empty cache" to automatic when quitting firefox. At the same time before quitting, I also emptied the cache and history and cookies manually. It just never restarted. It froze on opening.

A few times a box opened asking me if I wanted to start it in "safe mode". I tried this but nothing happened. It just froze up.

I downloaded another version of firefox, the same most recent one, and it also does not start. So the problem is probably not in the software but a conflict.

I use a mac OSX 10.9.1

If Firefox wasn't able to finish clearing data set via "Clear history when Firefox closes" then Firefox tries to do this on the next start.

Note that if you use "Clear history when Firefox closes" to clear the Cache that this disables the disk cache as you can see on the about:cache by the missing section.

Try to start Firefox in Safe Mode to see if that is possible:

  • On Mac, hold down the Options key while starting Firefox

Try to use the Profile Manager to create a new profile as to see if that is possible.

If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from an existing profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over the problem.
