Since updating Thunderbird to 45.0 yesterday, it will not display any emails; they are "Loading."

Using Windows 10 with Avast A/V. Thunderbird continues to retrieve new messages on all my email accounts, as does my Android phone. The list of new and old message headers is displayed in the upper window, but the lower window which should display the message body (along with the links at the upper right to reply, etc.) is blank. The spot just above the left top of the lower window, which normally displays the subject of the selected email, says "Loading..." All this is unchanged after > 8 hours. This is the same for all emails, new and old, in my inbox and in folders where I have saved older messages. Rebooted machine, no different. Task Manager shows Thunderbird using only 0 - 1.5% of CPU, so it is not working very hard trying to load.

Found a solution now: Closed ThB & restarted it in "Run as Administrator" mode (not Safe Mode) => everything as it should be, also after closing it again & restarting in normal mode.

Please tell us, does problem go away if you start thunderbird in safe mode?

This is a little strange, but I'm very happy ...

Yes, the problem I posted went away when I started Thunderbird in safe mode. The new problem it created was that my folder list in the left-hand panel was jumbled.

But then when I restarted Thunderbird in normal mode (with extensions running) everything worked as it should. I don't know why going to safe mode and then back to normal mode fixed everything, but thank you very much for this suggestion!

I have this problem, too, but it only goes away in Safe Mode; as soon as I start ThB in normal mode again, it returns and I again get just 'loading' for all email messages, old and new, on all accounts. Using Windows 8.1 with McAfee. - Restarting the system doesn't help either.

I still have the problem after starting in safe mode, and when running as administrator. Using Windows 7 with Norton. I wish you would give an option to "upgrade" rather than doing it in the background so we could avoid potential problems. The program was working perfectly an hour ago and now is wrecked.

I'm sorry to hear that, sounds absolutely awful! I am not an expert, but I think what I'd do is try to go back to 38. As far as I can see, the old version cannot be downloaded anymore from the Mozilla page, but it might still be there in your downloads folder, so you could uninstall 45 and re-install 38. Or you might be able to find it somehere else. (Or perhaps even un- & re-instaling 45 might help? - but I think this is a question for the support experts; I am just a regular user.) At any rate, I know how to prevent ThB from updating automatically: Go to "Tools" => "Options" => "Advanced" => "Updates" => choose "Check for updates, bit let me choose ..." I do hope you'll succeed one way or the other - best wishes!

I finally figured it out. Started in safe mode and clicked "permanently disable add-ons", and mail reappeared. Then went in and manually re-enabled the add-ons I wanted (like Lightning) and when I restarted the program it loaded properly. Whew!

Glad you made it, congrats!

Sounds like a bad interraction between addons, and you are not the first to experience this.

Would you please list for us the names of ALL your addons?

I have reactivated the following: Adblock Plus Lightning and everything appears to work fine.

I have these others that I haven't yet activated (and may not bother): ImportExportTools MoreFunctionsforAddressBook ProfileSwitcher Theme Font & Size Changer Thunderbird Conversations

I hope this proves helpful to someone else with this problem.

I have seen Conversations mentioned in a few of the problem threads.
