Very recently I was signed out of my remembered Google Account on Firefox. When I attempted to log back in and entered my email, I click the Next button but it is unresponsive, the website/application itself is still working but that button and many of my other websites do not work anymore like internal network websites such as Sonarr or external websites such as StockX.

I have attempted clearing out all my caches/history and running it in safe mode. Neither worked. Nothing new has been added to my FF in a long time, only it's occasional updates.

All help is greatly appreciated!

I had a similar problem too, and I solved it when I realized that my DNS had been kijacked. Look at your IP configuration an check if something has changed. When I got my correct DNS back, everything worked as ususal. I hope this can help you.

Hi beefycakes, I think you've checked the first several things I would usually suggest.

Assuming you normally use Google in a regular window, does it make any difference to test in a private window (Ctrl+Shift+p)? The main difference is that the private window doesn't inherit cookies or cached files from the regular window.

Is it just the mouse? In other words, if you leave the cursor in the username field and press the Enter key to submit the form, does it work?

Do you have a touchscreen (not a touchpad below the keyboard, but a touch-sensitive screen)? Sometimes users report that certain page features such as drop-down menus work with touch but not the mouse.

Hi jscher,

Thanks for responding!

When I try a private browser, it works.. Think you might be onto something. Earlier I did clear my cookies along with my cache/history though

Attempting to use the enter key also does not work and I don't have touchscreen on my PC.

A user in another thread reported similarly: fails in a regular window, works in a private window. I'm not sure what could explain that. Maybe there is an issue with "local storage" which like cookies is isolated in private windows. You could try clearing it as follows:

While on a google.com page in a regular window, call up the Storage Inspector using either

  • Shift+F9
  • menu button > Web Developer > Storage Inspector
  • (menu bar) Tools > Web Developer > Storage Inspector

In the left column change from cookies to local storage and look for anything stored by Google and remove it.

Then load the login page and remove any stored items, then reload the page and try to log in. Any difference?

I deleted all items (from Cache, Cookies, Indexed DB, Local, and Session) but issue still remains. I do see in the Cookies session a GAPS and NID item are created when I click on the Next button. So it looks like the website is sending me back a fresh Cookie file (the expiry date changes), but for what ever reason it doesn't go past that

Are you using any content blocking extensions ?

These extensions also might not work in a PB mode window.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Themes
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window

Hi Cor-el,

I was using uBlock Origin before, but I have it disabled already. I tried disabling all my extensions and add-ons but doesn't seem to be the factor.

So far we've deduced it works when in a PB window but not in safe mode.

I tried disabling Hardware Acceleration but that also didn't fix anything. I also removed all themes and am currently only using the default theme.

I attempted to do a clean wipe of Firefox (its my main browser so I'm getting desperate!) I wiped the AppData files, made sure no files remained in the Program Files folder.

I can now log into Google account but now my Firefox application is goofing up. 1. Sometimes it won't open a window but runs in the background (I see it in the task manager) 2. the left and right edges of the browser do not fill up when maximized 3. Window cannot be adjusted in size

I've tried the "Refresh Firefox" option when starting safe mode but doesn't seem to fix it.

Do a malware check with several malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.

Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware. All these programs have free versions.

Make sure you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

You can also do a check for a rootkit infection with TDSSKiller.
