I installed sync first on the laptop then on the desktop. All of the bookmarks on the desktop were replaced by the few I had on the laptop.

I disconnected the desktop and recovered all the bookmarks.

I would like to sync the laptop and have all the bookmarks from the desktop show on the lap top and then keep them in sync.

Thanks for any help

Thanks for posting back. Glad you found a solution.

Once you have the bookmarks the same Sync should be ok, and has the advantages of creating an additional backup on the server and of course keeping them synced.

When in the past I used the old Sync I did sometimes have problems though and I tended to keep backup bookmarks & even backup profiles.

Are both the Desktop and the Laptop on Firefox 29 and you are using the new sync ?

Try this

  1. Backup the few laptop bookmarks as HTML exports.
  2. Connect the Desktop to sync
BUT first of all backup the bookmarks as Firefox's. json backups
Make sure you can see the file extensions i.e. the part of the name after the dot http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/show-hide-file-name-extensions#show-hide-file-name-extensions=windows-7
  3. Connect the laptop to Sync, and allow it to Sync bookmarks

I have not actually tried that myself as I only have the one device now but it should work. If anything goes wrong you have manual backups. Take care with the manual backups. The .html import will append or tag on ok to existing ones, the .json restore will overwrite and destroy any existing bookmarks.

I am not sure whether on first connection with sync the laptop will update to the full set of bookmarks including its own, or more likely it will get its own overwritten by the ones synced from the desktop to the server, but if that happens just reimport the HTML bookmarks BUT in to the desktop. You may need to clean up any duplicates and you may need to move bookmarks around between folders but there is no need to do it all at once.

I decided to not sync the two computers. I exported the bookmarks from the desktop to an HTML file and imported it into the laptop.
