How do I "exit" Firefox, one tab at a time?
This is typically frustrating. Remain calm...It's taken me 30 minutes and this is the third time I've posed this same stupid question: Whatever happened to simple, plain "exit?" Now, one can close a tab, but you can bet that site and all its cookies are still running. Where oh where is "exit?"

hello,
You should have a small "x" on each particular tab, clicking on that cross sign lets you exit/close a particular tab.
or Right click on the tab and click on Close Tab.
or Middle Click Mouse button.
Clicking on the Big "X" on the top right corner exits Firefox.
that only closes the tab, but it does not actually exit the site. I have found multiple sites running in the background after doing this. Clicking on the x on the tab is not the same as exit...I thought it was.

How can you say that ?? Are there any more Windows opened ?
I can say that because that's what happens. My computer doesn't want to shut off because all these windows are open, yet I can't find them. I know it sounds weird, but it's true.
Ok, can you please tell what message you get while Shutting-down your PC?
Does it says any Firefox Instance is running in the back ground??
Sometimes Google Drive and other software might cause this problem.
It doesn't say what's running, but the other day....I'm not sure what I did...I think I re-opened Firefox when it said an open program was preventing the shutdown, and there were all the pages I had closed with that x on the tab, open.
Firefox hamburger menu "≡ > Exit"
This then closes all of Firefox. The X on a Tab only closes that tab and the X on window only closes that one window.
So, you mean when you restarted firefox you got your previous session running with all the tabs opened that you have visited previously.
Please check if your Firefox settings are set to open your Firefox from the last windows and tabs.
Click on the Menu Button (3 horizontal tiles like icon ) on the right top looks like this . Click on Preferences =>click on General Change the option in "When Firefox Starts:"
OR, you can try resetting Firefox: Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings
^It is Options on Windows by the way.
thank you all...I will follow your suggestions. I appreciate your help.
