I'm using Gmail (but I don't exclude an option of migrating to another mail service in the future). If I send a big attachment (e.g. 10MB), the attachment is uploaded twice - once while sending, once while copying to Sent.

Can this be avoided, i.e. can the file be uploaded only once while sending a message?

You probably have checked the option in your account settings to place a copy into the Sent folder. This is not needed in case of Gmail. https://support.google.com/mail/answer/78892?hl=en
