Login to Gmail account no longer works. Error message is: "Non riuscito l'invio della password per l'utente xxxxxxxx@gmail.com. Il server di posta pop.gmail.com ha risposto: Web login required: https://support.google.com/mail/answer/78754.

Received a mail from Gmail saying they blocked the access to my account. They suggest to allow less safe apps... but I do not want to! Will I be able to keep using Thunderbird?? Or will I have to switch to something else? Hope this problem is fixed soon!

Upgrade to Version 38. It supports this bogus "less secure" junk made up by Google.

You'll need to set Authentication type to 'OAuth2' in your Account Settings.
