Double clicking on the 'star' to bookmark no longer shows the menu to tag and categorize. How can I get that back?

When i click the blue star to book mark, it hops over to the folder on the right, but when I click again, I no longer see the menu so that I can tag and file my bookmarks. I don't even know if my pages are even really being bookmarked. I guess if they are they're all in unsorted bookmarks. What can I do to get the tagging and categorizing features back?

jscher2000 - I'm doing the HAPPY DANCE!!!! That did it! I should have suspected IE. I can't stand IE and I don't need the tab. I used it sometimes for webpages that seemed to act contrary and hang up in FireFox. Thank you so very much!!!!

Does the Edit Bookmark dialog appear if you press Ctrl+d, or if you choose Edit This Bookmark from the classic Bookmarks menu (Alt+b)?

Sometimes add-ons can break how built-in features work. Could you test in Firefox's Safe Mode? That's a standard diagnostic tool to deactivate extensions and some advanced features of Firefox. More info: Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode.

If Firefox is not running: Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox.

If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

and OK the restart.

Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).

Any improvement?

I read on another site that various IE Tab extensions and possibly the Tree Style Tab extension could be affecting the bookmark dialog.

jscher2000,

You asked: Does the Edit Bookmark dialog appear if you press Ctrl+d, or if you choose Edit This Bookmark from the classic Bookmarks menu (Alt+b)? Ctrl+D does not work. Alt+B did open the toolbar menu, but I didn't see an option to tag.

I did as you suggested and started FireFox in safe mode. The bookmark feature worked great. I could tag and file my bookmark in the folder I wanted. I guess that means that there's an Add-On that messing up my bookmark feature. I haven't installed any add-ons lately and a while back, I disabled most of what I had so my browser would run more efficiently.

Am I right to assume it's an add-on and if so, do you have any suggestions for me to find out what add-on it is that might be causing the issue?

Also, I read your second comment about the Tree Style Tab extension, but I have to admit, I have no idea what that is...sorry.

Thank you for testing! Safe Mode disables one kind of add-on: extensions. You can copy/paste a list of your extensions from the support information page. You can open that using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

Scroll down and look for the Extensions heading, the select the entire table below that, copy (Ctrl+c or right-click > Copy) and paste into a reply. It's a bit messy, but we're used to it.

OMG, I'm sure this looks horrific! I'm attaching a copy/paste of the extensions from a screen shot. That might be easier.

Could you try disabling IE Tab + ?

I don't know how many sites you actually use it for, but hopefully you don't need it on a regular basis, or for those you could switch to an extension that launches the site in IE instead of embedding IE in a tab. For example: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/open-in-ie/

I have this problem, too (October 2015). I followed the directions and located the Troubleshooting Information page and the Extensions block.

My problem is I don't see an IE Tab extension. Here are the extensions I found:

Adblock Plus 2.4.1 false {d10d0bf8-f5b5-c8b4-a8b2-2b9879e08c5d} Add Bookmark Here ² 29.0.20140506 false abhere2@moztw.org AddThis 3.5.9 false {3e0e7d2a-070f-4a47-b019-91fe5385ba79} Auto-Sort Bookmarks 2.4 false sortbookmarks@bouanto Bloody Vikings! 0.5.10 false bloodyvikings@ffs.bplaced.net Capture & Print 0.1.9.0 false {146f1820-2b0d-49ef-acbf-d85a6986e10c} CookieKeeper 1.8.4 false cookiekeeper@cookiekeeper.mozdev.org Email Link button 0.9 false {2A638E17-DE1D-48d3-A4B7-39E9670FF77A} Flashblock 1.5.18 false {3d7eb24f-2740-49df-8937-200b1cc08f8a} HP Smart Web Printing 4.60 false smartwebprinting@hp.com PriceBlink 4.1 false info@priceblink.com Print Edit 15.4 false printedit@DW-dev Print selected text 0.4 false pst@i1024a.pl Print/Print Preview 0.9 false {19EB90DC-A456-458b-8AAC-616D91AAFCE1} SaveAS 0.1 false {018f3160-1a6f-4650-84fd-aad8c13609c8} Shorten URL (bit.ly) 0.94 false {a1109c2a-1187-4027-901d-13097b755625} The Ultimate Free Stock Photo Search Addon 1.0.1 false stockphotofeeds@stockphotofeeds.com Unzip 0.11.63.1-signed false {27e54308-4b3e-45ae-a10e-5d7c7890ee07}

My questions are...

...did I overlook it? ...is something else causing this problem?

I hope you all can help me out. I use the bookmarks function frequently for my business.

Kindest thanks, Jo

Hi Jo, to see whether extensions are relevant in your case, did it make any difference to test in Firefox's Safe Mode? That's a standard diagnostic tool to deactivate extensions and some advanced features of Firefox. More info: Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode.

If Firefox is not running: Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox. (For Mac, hold down the option key instead of the Shift key.)

Hi Jo, I didn't notice this before, but your version of Add Bookmark Here 2 is rather old now (May 2014). Please try updating it using one of the following approaches.

(1) You can trigger the built-in extension updater from the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a (Mac: Cmd+Shift+a)
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Extensions. Then find the "gear" button above the list and "Check for Updates".

(2) Or install again from here: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/add-bookmark-here-2/

Hopefully that will fix it.

Success! I updated the extension and it's back to working!! Thank you, thank you.

While I was on the extension page, I changed to automatically updating all extensions, because most of the others had updates, too.

Appreciate your wise help!

Cheers, Jo
