Firefox updated itself a week or so ago and now all of my bookmarks are gone. I tried following the instructions to restore them from and old backup, but the oldest backup I could choose was August 22nd, which did not contain my old bookmarks. I am a teacher and have been accumulating these bookmarks for years now. I have to get them back!!!

Could you check whether there is an Old Firefox Data on your desktop? If so, could you click inside and check inside the latest semi-randomly-named folder for a bookmarkbackups folder. Anything recent?

Firefox 40.0.3 has only been released on August 27, 2015

Note that Firefox only creates a new compressed .jsonlz4 backup if there have been changes in the calculated hash.

Did you try to restore that backup?

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database file (bookmarks, history) in the Firefox profile folder.
