I got an error message from the paypal site that said the page is not redirecting properly. So I opened a new tab and typed www.paypal.com and I should get the home screen. I don't. I get the same address in the location bar as I did when I got this error saying that the page is not redirecting properly. I'm in a loop. I go to Privacy setting, clear all cookies for paypal, and then I can use www.paypal.com. How do I stop Firefox from changing the address I type in the location bar.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift>
(Mac Options)
key, and then starting Firefox. Is the problem still there?

Clear the cache and remove cookies only from websites that cause problems.

"Clear the Cache":

  • Firefox/Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Cached Web Content: "Clear Now"

"Remove Cookies" from sites causing problems:

  • Firefox/Tools > Options > Privacy > "Use custom settings for history" > Cookies: "Show Cookies"

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

I want to thank you for your response. You know you don't really expect me to do this each time I get this error in paypal do you? It happened 3 times and I cleared the paypal cookies three time. I would not be asking you if I hadn't done that three times. So I'll ask again.

If I type www.paypal.com It returns www.paypal.com/what ever which is the same address that produced the error. It does not go to www.paypal.com

It shouldn't be necessary that cookies need to be removed manually. Such issues can be caused by security software or cleanup software that causes files to get corrupted or otherwise interferes with cookies.

If clearing cookies didn't help then it is possible that the cookies.sqlite file that stores the cookies got corrupted.

  • Rename (or delete) cookies.sqlite (cookies.sqlite.old) and if present delete cookies.sqlite-shm and cookies.sqlite-wal in the Firefox profile folder in case cookies.sqlite got corrupted.

You can use this button to go to the current Firefox profile folder:
