How do I fix error "Sending of password for user me@gmail.com did not succeed"? Web login required
I use TB with multiple email accounts, but for one of my gmail accounts I can't receive new messages because I get this error: Error with account ME@gmail.com Sending of password for user ME@gmail.com did not succeed. Mail server pop.googlemail.com responded: Web login required: https://support.google.com/mail/answer/78754
At first I thought my account was hacked, so I changed the Google password and get same error. I suspected Google OAuth2 problem, but I just upgraded to TB 35.5.0 and restarted TB and I get the same error. I deleted the stored passwords for that account in the Password Manager, then tried to sign-in again to get messages (and checked the box to store the new password). I've changed the Google password two times, and after each change TB asks for the new password, and also wants a code that is sent to my cell phone, which I enter as requested.
FYI: I am using POP for this account, but that's not the only problem because I have a different gmail account that works just fine on POP. Also I do not use a master password, only the Password Manager. I also tried Allow Less secure apps in the Google settings, in case Google considered TB less secure. I also don't have TB looking for email every 10 minutes, so it is not that problem.

Did you follow the instructions given with the error message?

The latest version of Thunderbird is 45.1. Update to the latest version. OAuth2 was supported as of version 38, and for IMAP and SMTP only.
and also wants a code that is sent to my cell phone, which I enter as requested.
If you have 2-step authentication enabled you'll need to create in app password for Thunderbird.

There were no instructions other than the link to read the support article.
I had used Help, About Thunderbird, Check for updates, but apparently it had to upgrade to 35.5 first. I Checked for Updates again and now it is 45.1 and I don't get the error message any longer. I do not have the full 2-step authentication enabled, but for some reason it still had me enter a number which came at text to my phone number.
