How does one access one's email when traveling?

When one is traveling and using a notebook computer how does one access one's email from a strange server, not one's home server?

What strange server? You get your email from your providers server. No place else. If for some reason you cannot connect to their server with an email client then log into your account on their web mail page using an Internet browser.
