When composing email message using thunderbird and including an attachment then hitting send I get a server timed out message. Size of attachment can be very small, ver large, or more than one attachment. How to fix?

Anti-Virus may be causing this: Do you scan emails before sending ? Suggest you switch off scanning outgoing emails and retry.

disabled outgoing email scan (using Norton) but this did not solve problem. Cannot originate, reply to, or forward any email without getting error msg "server timed out". My web mail is through verizon server.
