I shut down the laptop this morning, re-opened it, and now all the "X" (close-tab) buttons are missing. One forum suggested setting the config variable "browser.tabs.closeButtons" to 1, but there's no such variable in my about.config. FF 49.0.2.

Re-install the firefox..

Reinstalling didn't help, but starting in safe mode did. Uninstalling Tab Mix Plus solved the problem permanently..

Hi MichaelArmstrong, thanks for the update.

Tab Mix Plus has so many features to configure it might be hard to find the relevant setting, but you should be able to turn the close button on/off under "Display" and then the "Tab" mini-tab, according to this online manual:
