im downloading .torrent files, i want firefox to remember my selection to automatically open them with my default torrent client. the checkbox to do that is greyed out / disabled. i dont care about security reasons im a pro user and i can take care of my self and i know what i am downloading thank you

its been like this for like many latest versions, about a year but i've had it now.

This is usually not about security issues, but about how the file is send by the server (content MIME type). When this choice is grayed (disabled) then this can mean that the server is sending the file as a generic file type or as content-disposition. You can use Live Http Headers in case the Network Monitor isn't catching this download.
