Thunderbird installation on new computer: No Formatting Bar on Write page. View>Toolbars shows three toolbars (all checked): Menu, Composition, and Status. But no Formatting Bar. I've tried Customize>Add new toolbar, but when I add a new toolbar called Formatting Bar, the proper commands aren't available. THANIS!

Chosen solution

The formatting bar only appears when you are configured to compose using HTML.

In Account Settings for this account, look at the Composition & Addressing panel, and make sure the "Compose messages in HTML format" checkbox is ticked.

You may have to go round the loop and enable it in View|Toolbars.

Note that even when you have set HTML mode and enabled the toolbar, it normally still won't show if you reply to or forward a message that was composed in plain text mode.
