I have a need to interrupt or stop the downloading of immaterial content from obnoxious and inconsiderate web sites without closing the Firefox session. A fix might include the immediate transfer to a link when selected. Animations, videos, and advertisements have ruined the browsing experience I have enjoyed since 1998.

What you are describing sounds like adware.

Go to the Mozilla Add-ons Web Page {web Link} (There’s a lot of good stuff here) and search for a good ad / pop-up blocker.

You may have ad/mal-ware. Further information can be found in this article; https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-caused-malware?cache=no

Run most or all of the listed malware scanners. Each works differently. If one program misses something, another may pick it up.
