Thunderbird freezes when switching back from eMail to message list (Linux Mint 18.3)

Using Thunderbird 60.4.0 x64 on Linux Mint 18.3, when I open an email (in a new Thunderbird tab) and switch back to the message list (by closing the eMail or switching tabs, doesn't matter), the browser freezes for a time. The time depends on the number of listed eMails (i.e., a folder with 1000 eMails hangs longer than one with 10 eMails, and in threaded view, the hang is shorter if threads are collapsed). The problem also occurs in safe mode, with all add-ons disabled. I also created a new, clean profile, synced only one eMail account to it, and the problem still occurs.

I have four eMail accounts set up, the largest of which has 15k eMails. My Laptop has a Core i7 6600U with 16 GB RAM and an SSD. The same problem occurs on a different laptop of mine, with similar specs.

Please let me know what additional information you need.

Sorry for the long time without reply. I recently updated to Linux Mint 19.1. Whatever the problem was, it is now gone (even though I copied over my thunderbird profile). May have been some incompatibility with outdated packages in my old Mint installation.

I do not have access to OSX, but on windows there is an enable hardware acceleration in the equivalent of preferences > Advanced > General. Try changing it. It is one of those settings that is hardware and driver revision dependent. It has no right setting, only the one that works for you. If none of that helps, I suggest you file a bug. Really. https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/

They might say it is support, they will probably refer you to https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird:Testing:Memory_Usage_Problems

That is good information and is relevant in this instance and you should try it before you file a bug. The idea being to get to a point you can reproduce it so a developer can reproduce it to fix it. For instance do you have a non SSD laptop that does not shows the issue?
