FireFox Portable for Mac Not Working
FireFox Portable for Mac Not Working
Hi there,
I am trying to get FireFox Portable working with my Mac but am really struggling and not sure what to try next.
My Mac runs on macOS Mojave, version 10.14.6
I have tried downloading and running FireFox Portable for Mac from both of these sites:
https://portable-firefox.en.softonic.com/mac https://download.cnet.com/Portable-Firefox/3000-2356_4-93635.html
When I download the install file, everything seems ok. I run through the normal install procedures.
It asks me if I trust the program, normal stuff like that.
But then when I try to open it, I just get that fail noise Macs make sometimes.
I have tried rebooting my Mac, I have made sure my normal version of FireFox is fully shut down.
I have checked as best I can to make sure no FireFox process are running in the background.
I have read the "Read me" txt file and made sure my Mac OS version is compatible.
But I still can't get it to work and I have no idea why or what else I can try to hopefully get it up and running.
If anyone on this forum has any ideas of how to get this fixed I would be really grateful.
Thanks
Tim

Hi Tim, that isn't an official Mozilla release, and it seems to be 10+ years old.
Why are you looking for a "Portable" variant of Firefox instead of (or to supplement) a regular release?
Hi, thanks for your speedy reply.
I tried to find other downloads but couldn't find any on the Mozzilla site.
I am currently using multiple Firefox portables for windows on a windows VPS. But would like to shut down the VPS and just run them on my Mac.
I use them so create specific environments for some work I do. It saves me a lot of time and hassle having the different environments at the click of a button.
As a Windows person, I don't fully understand how installations on Mac work.
Let's imagine you have Firefox 70 installed, and you want a side-by-side installation of Firefox Developer Edition. That should work because it is a distinct application with its own program folder, and is designed to use a different profile folder to keep its settings distinct. On the other hand, if you wanted to install the Extended Support Release of Firefox 68, there could be a program folder name and profile conflict, so some kind of manual manipulation would be needed.
More info on multiple profiles:
Thanks I will do some more reading and report back
Installing multiple Firefox versions on Mac OS X is basically dragging the Firefox application out of the DMG file to the desktop and rename the folder. You can drag the renamed Firefox application folder to the Applications folder like you would normally install Firefox. Make sure to create separate profiles for each Firefox version.
PortableApps - https://portableapps.com/ -, the organization that created and distributes Firefox Portable never made a version for Mac. The "equivalent" version for Mac was from a different organization and it was discontinued after the Intel processors replaced the PPC processors, iirc.
