I have a text signature saved under Account profile -- I do not want it automatically added to every message. While I compose a new message I want to insert that signature. How to do it? Running latest TB on MacOS. Thanks.

Chosen solution

Freezing has a number of sources, among them allowing a security/AV app to scan email. Add the TB profile folder as an exception or exclusion, or disable mail shields, guards etc., and see if it still freezes. An add-on could also cause it, but it's a simple matter to run TB in safe mode to test the effect of add-ons etc.

If you put a signature into the 'Account Settings' then it will auto get used in every 'Write' email, so you end up needing to delete it if not required.

The alternative would be to remove the signature from the 'Account Settings', this would mean when you click on 'Write' there would not be a set automatic signature applied....but....

There is an addon called 'Signature Switch' which I think would suit your needs. This addon allows you to choose to add an appropriate signature from a html file.

You can create signature html files using the Thunderbird 'Write' window.

On my desktop, I have a folder called 'Signatures' and it contains various html files with different signatures. Some are used for family and others are more formal.

Signature Switch allows me to choose an appropriate signature. It also allows me to preset a particular signature automatically to specific email addresses. eg: When I enter a family email address, it auto adds a particular signature.

How to create html signature files:

How to install addon extension:

Useful help:

See image below as guide on how to get the 'Signature Switch' onto toolbar in Write window. Once you have 'Signature' onto the toolbar, has a drop down which shows 'Options'. This gives you access to adding pre created html signature files and other settings. Once the files are added, they will also display in the drop down.

Thanks. This does not answer my question :-) And the first part of the answer is wrong. You can choose to have the std signature posted on every msg or not (under Accounts...)

If you set an account in Account Settings to add a signature then it will add it when you choose to send using that accounts emails address. If you uncheck it or remove the signature setting from the Account in Account Settings then it removes it.

You can set different accounts to use or not use signatures.

If you can show an image of Account Settings for an account, where you can choose how that account (FROM email address) can differentiate between all your 'TO' addresss and add or remove the signature which is selected in the Account Settings for that FROM email address, then please post the info.

Anyone can choose to set or not set an automatic signature to any account and any email can have a manually added signature regardless of whether the automatic signature is set or not because all emails are editable.

But that is a tiresome method of continually editing when there is an alternative.

Are you saying that the addon 'Signature Switch' is not working on a MAC OS ? It would be useful to know.

Thank you. Nice of people trying to answer but that's not the question I asked. I made my question more clear by adding SOMETIMES. Switching accounts, importing externally save signature etc. are NOT the answer.

"I have a text signature saved under Account profile -- I do not want it automatically added to every message. While I compose a new message I want to SOMETIMES insert that signature. How to do it? Running latest TB on MacOS. Thanks. "

I don't want to use SIGNATURE SWITCH addon b/c I don't want to do what you said it does.

I want a simple feature, like ADD SIGNATURE or INSERT SIGNATURE that takes the signature under settings/account... and inserts it - simple. SOMETIMES ( I don't want to have it set to always add).

I think the method with Signature Switch will achieve your purposes, but you may prefer using an add-on like Quicktext.

Thank you. QuickText I know and used before, but one day it was not supported and all my QT's were gone...

My issue with addons is, TB as it is with just one add on I have (remove duplicate) freezes from time to time. That sucks.

Thanks. I don't run any anti virus (running mac).

So no idea what it can be. very annoying -- and my drafts folder has 100 msgs saved from the crashes.

safe mode not option since freezing is not manually recreatable.

If you have had crashes, there may be reports in Help/Troubleshooting, and you can post the crash URLs here for assessment.

If you're inclined to find the source of freezes or crashes, there is a useful diagnostic list here:

THANKS. YOU'RE AN EXPERT. Any way to make TB fonts itself bigger (not just message window). The Font changer addon is not compatible with current version...

There is an (overly) long topic that describes a simple method (change a preference in Config. editor) and a slightly less simple method (userChrome.css):

Also, performance issues are almost never related to the amount of RAM.

Found an addon called ADD SIGNATURE

it works if your account signature is HTML -- else, no line breaks...

Thanks a million !! You rock!! Used the config editor under preferences/advanced/general -- and set layout.css.devPixelsPerPx to 1.45 -- please tell the team to set the default to zero. -1 kills the UI. Thanks.
