Latest Firefox (77) doesn't work

Running setup-stub on my Sony Vaio with 64-bit Windows 7, 4 GB RAM and 250 GB free disk space seemed to launch installation and run to completion with no error message, but clicking desktop icon had no result. Tried "clean install" by removing browser file from C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox and repeating installation. Same lack of result. No firefox.exe program was found by Windows. Retried after turning off Norton antivirus/firewall. Same result. Download and installation of version 76.0.1 seemed to work - there is a populated Mozilla Firefox folder under C:\Program Files - but double-clicking firefox.exe does nothing. What to do? (I'm using Chrome to post the question.) Thanks in advance for any help.

Boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support to see if that has effect in case security software is causing problems.

Thanks for the reply. Booting in safe mode with networking did enable Firefox to start and acknowledge that a new installation had taken place. Unfortunately, the browser does not launch after restarting to normal mode. Should I take my case to Norton?

It may be relevant to say that, to launch the Chrome that's enabling this exchange, I have to click the taskbar icon, wait 5 sec or so, and click again. I had this experience sometimes in the last month with Firefox 76, which when it got going showed 3-4 processes in Windows Task Manager.

Haven't found the source(s) of the problem yet, but there's something in the system that is invisible to Norton Internet Security but is messing around with the registry. Two days ago, I found files with the .bin extension associated with VLC media player, and after starting up today, the SVG files that I've been creating in Inkscape are suddenly associated with Firefox. (Yesterday the filenames appeared under Inkscape icons; now it's the Firefox icon.)
