Also, when I go type in the address bar, the history no longer appears and without the browser bar working I have to search every time.

Chosen solution

If Firefox was uninstalled and reinstalled it was nothing I did. It was working fine last time logged in and then this morning this. I have done nothing on my end and I am pretty computer savvy so, while I can't deny having made some snafus in my day, this definitely isn't one of them. :-)

Hi GarySGP, me again. It almost sounds like you've completely uninstalled FireFox and then reinstalled, but that's just speculation. At any rate, can you confirm that you're logged into a FireFox account (this is useful for many things, such as saving browser settings, uninstalling/reinstalling, transferring systems, and so on)? You do this by clicking the "application menu" icon on the far right of the browser (it's on the same line as the URL address bar and looks like three horizontal lines), and then at the very top you should see your email address. Expand it and ensure you're logged in.

If you use Sync then best is to disconnect Sync temporarily during troubleshooting.

This could be a problem with the places.sqlite and favicons.sqlite files in the Firefox profile folder.

  • use the "Places Database" -> "Verify Integrity" button on the "Help -> More Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page

If errors are reported with "Verify Integrity", close and restart Firefox or reboot and retry.

If "Verify Integrity" cannot repair places.sqlite, rename/remove all places.sqlite and favicons.sqlite files in the Firefox profile folder with Firefox closed. Firefox will rebuild places.sqlite and restore the bookmarks from the most recent JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder.

  • keep a backup copy of places.sqlite in case a new places.sqlite database has to be created
  • you lose the history when a new places.sqlite is created

You may have to restore an older bookmarks backup in the bookmarkbackups folder via the Bookmarks Manager (Library).
