Please tell me how to go back to Firefox "regular" or Ff Beta from Ff Nightly for Android.

I can't stand not being able to bookmark easily and *especially* miss adding bookmarks to my home page(s) and the endless update is interruptive. My phone is very slow as it is.

Thanks. I am afraid to migrate Firefox "backwards" from Nightly to beta or just ordinary. I lost all my bookmarks a year ago by uninstalling Instagram which somehow wiped out Firefox as well.

Many thanks.

Hi

I should be able to help with this. If you:

  1. sign into your (or set up a) Firefox Account of the version you are currently using,
  2. browse for a little while then force a sync to happen
  3. sign into the same account on the version you want to use

You should find that all your bookmarks, passwords and other data are moved across between the two.

Hello Seburo, thanks for your help. I now have two versions on Firefox on my android (a brand new copy of the Standard, and the existing Nightly) and am ready to make the leap backward.

1. Unfortunately I can't sign in to Nightly or create an account. I don't see anywhere to do that in Nightly.( I do have a Ff account.). Nightly seems to. Have been overtaken by the search engine duckduckgo.

2. Ditto syncing on Nightly. I don't see anywhere that would let me do that. Can you explain what you mean by "force a sync to happen"

more options

It should be in Settings -> the first position (Firefox Account or Turn on Sync) -> Sync now.

Hello TyDraniu, that's easy in Firefox but in Nightly I see no overflow bar absolutely stripped down, no access to settings in the app itself & I've tried getting into elsewhere. This is one reason I want to go back to something familiar and manageable. I can't remember why I thought Nightly would be a good idea. :-)

Hi

I am not sure what you mean - to sign into your Firefox Account and access the Firefox Sync settings, open the Firefox for Android menu, select Settings and it is at the top of the list (in all current versions of Firefox for Android).

Sorry but there is no menu access from my Firefox Nightly. If I open Nightly, there is nothing but a menu bar and settings for tabs, available in the tabs. Nothing else. I am at home in Firefox for Android "vanilla" but something's happened in Nightly.

Hi

Where did you download your copy of Nightly from? Are you able to attach a screenshot to a reply to this thread?

more options

I don't remember where I downloaded it from. Usually from mozilla's site, possible via Google Play. It's been a while and I am pretty sure it's changed over time with the "nightly" s -- or is it that Duckduckgo has taken it over somehow? I can't seem to separate the two.

I took a screenshot but it has taken ten minutes and is still uploading So I will send this now.

Hello again. I sent that off & now have another screen shot for you of the main Ff Nightly page. Please see attached. Again, it is taking many minutes and never seems to upload correctly. How long should an upload take? Seconds, I assume. It hasn't loaded in ten minutes and it makes me nervous so I will send this now. Thanks for your help.

Okay. If you could attach a screenshot when you get the opportunity to, that will help us to look into this matter for you.

I don't have much confidence that I will ever be able to attach a screenshot after twice waiting for ten minutes with the "wait" wheel spinning and no result. Any suggestions?

I am trying again. I even forced a stop on my Kaspersky. No change. Checked that Ff had permission to access files .... Not sure what else to do.

I cannot see what you can see on your screen, but if you open the Firefox for Android menu, select Settings and look at the top of the list, you will see the option to set up Firefox Sync on your device with you Firefox Account.

Hi Seburo,

So I decided to do your suggested process (below) backwards, holding my breath that I wouldnt wipe out all my bookmarks.

You said earlier : « I should be able to help with this. If you:

# sign into your (or set up a) Firefox Account of the version you are currently using,
  1. browse for a little while then force a sync to happen
# sign into the same account on the version you want to use »

Instead I signed into the Firefox for Android I recently downloaded and forced a sync and MOST of the requested information came in ... but no bookmarks.

After a while, I decided to ask (checkbox) only for bookmarks -- and there they all are. ...

However they are no longer in "collections" as I suppose Firefox for Android doesn't have this feature yet.

I'm inclined to keep the Nightly on my phone awhile as I have no confidence that they other things requested (checkbox) like passwords have been transferred but I find the nightly downloads interrupt my use of my phone completely these days, getting all its attention and rendering it somewhat to completely useless for other things when the long long download is in process.

Thanks for your help! I still don't understand why there is no place to open a menu in Nightly on my device except to customize tabs. No chance to sign in from Nightly

Ps: I used the "number the paragraphs" button at the top of this page and go # signs instead of 1, 2, 3.

Pps: and strangely I think I'm still in Nightly here, through I've made my default browser Ff for Android. Odd

Collections cannot be transferred through Firefox Sync at present, but you can send them manually to another Firefox installation through the share icon in the Collection.

Thanks, I tried that and find that of three bookmarks in a collection it sends only the third one. Strange. I also see now that the bookmakers I've managed to download are of course not from Nightly but are from my laptop's Firefox collection. Darn!

Thanks again. I have never used Sync until today (though it says I did sixmonths ago??). Maybe eventually I will be able to amass everything in one place.

So: I am left with a lot of bookmarks in collections in Nightly that will have to be sent one by one to Ff for Android. Correct?

I do appreciate your help very much.

As I am keeping Nightly a while longer, is it ok to force a stop on the "nightly" downloads every time I notice them?

more options

If you mean the updates, you would need to do this at the Google Play store end, but I am not sure that you can do that for just one app and it would mean that apps on your device do not get important securty and stability updates (as well as new features).

more options

I can do it locally on my phone under settings/apps then choosing Ff nightly and tapping on it. The buttons along the top of a screenful of information on usage, etc are "uninstall" and "force stop". I did this when I couldnt figure out why it looked like a simple .pdf file download was taking a very long time and go spooked (not realising at first it's a glitch in Nightly's information-giving and it's the update that's downloading, not the last file one requested to download :-) )

Okay, thank you for your feedback.
