Editing already existing themes

I recently switched over to Firefox and I'm wondering how I can edit a theme I've already installed using Firefox color.

Chosen solution

A Theme XPI file needs to be signed to make it possible to install the theme in Firefox. So if you edit the file then then you invalidate the signing and you need to get the modified theme signed.

Is this also the cse if you just want to edit the theme for your own use, not to re-upload? There are so many lovely themes I've found which are 95% what I want but have only a couple of bad colour decisions that makes certain UI elements super difficult to read. I'd like to update those just for myself locally. Is there no way to do this? That'd be very frustrating if so.
