I'm trying to determine if I can use Thunderbird to basically be a local machine copy of my Gmail account, including everything—emails received, sent, archived, attachments, drafts, etc.

I want to keep using my Gmail account as usual through the Chrome browser with everything intact but can I, in effect, store a local machine version of it via Thunderbird?

Add the account as IMAP in TB, then all mail folders will be synced between webmail and TB. Calendars and contacts can also be synced. Once the account is in TB, mail copied to Local Folders can serve as a backup.
