When clicking on a PDF link, Firefox asks what to do. I opt to view the file in the PDF viewer, and do not select to Save it. Invariably, Firefox saves the PDF to my Downloads folder before opening it. This wasn't the case before. This clutters my Download folder as I open a lot of PDFs.

Is there a setting for PDFs which are just to be opened to reside in a temp directory until closed as previous versions did?

There is a preference you can change which may fix it but it almost certainly will be temporary.
