I have been successfully accessing my icloud account with thunderbird on Windows 10 for years and then on Tuesday (June 4th) it went weird. All I am left with is thunderbird's cached inbox e-mails. If I try to update the list of new e-mails, it just sits there with no errors reported. If I try to read some cached e-mails I can see the full text. (I am setup to always read plain text), but for some, I just get whitespace. I see "myname@icloud.com connected to imap.mail.me.com..." on the status line for most folders, but some just clear that status message.

That sounds like you might have antivirus issues. I would be more sure if it was windows, but they are turning up on mac these days and mac users are not used to just how unreliable they are.
